When brides plan their reception, they think about the colors, centerpieces, the cake, music and other items. One thing that they often don’t consider is the lighting. The right lighting can dramatically change the look of the room. It helps you to create ambiance and also forces your guests to look where you want them to look.

Have a wall you aren’t fond of? Dim the lights there and create a bright light away from it, drawing everyone’s attention away. An example would be to highlight the cake table with floor or overhead spot lighting to give a dramatic effect as guests enter the reception. The guests attention will be drawn to the lit cake table and away from the wall.

Take it one step further and light up the dance floor with one of the colors of your wedding. An experienced lighting specialist can do amazing things with lights even have your names or monogram in lights on a wall.

It is wise to have the assistance of a lighting specialist if you are having your reception outdoors; especially if using tents.

Flameless candles can be purchased at your local hobby, craft or discount store and can create that nice candle like glow if your venue does not allow open flame. While these may not be completely realistic, they can be made more so by surrounding them with flower petals or tissue paper.

DIY Pink & Blue Cake

1 box white cake mix
Water, vegetable oil and egg whites called for on cake mix box
Red and blue food colors
1 1/2 containers creamy vanilla frosting

1. Heat oven to 350°F (325°F for dark or nonstick pans). Grease or spray bottoms only of three 8-inch or 9-inch round pans.

2. Make cake batter as directed on box. Pour 1 1/2 cups of the batter into small bowl. Pour another 1 1/2 cups of the batter into one of the pans.

3. Stir 6 to 10 drops red food color into batter in small bowl. Stir 6 to 10 drops blue food color into batter in large bowl. Pour pink batter into another pan; pour blue batter into remaining pan. (If necessary, refrigerate 1 pan of batter until ready to bake.)

4. Bake 17 to 22 minutes (19 to 26 minutes for dark or nonstick pans) or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool 30 minutes; remove from pans to cooling rack. Cool completely, about 1 hour.

5. Brush crumbs off cake. Place blue layer, top side down, on plate. Spread 1/3 cup frosting on blue layer almost to edge. Place white layer, top side down, on frosted layer. Spread 1/3 cup frosting on white layer almost to edge. Place pink layer, top side up, on frosted layer. Frost side and top of cake with frosting. Store loosely covered.

1 box yellow cake mix
Water, vegetable oil and eggs called for on cake mix box
2 containers (12 oz each) whipped fluffy white frosting
Yellow food color
3 orange wedge candies
2 nonpareil candies (1-inch chocolate rounds topped with white sprinkles)
2 chocolate chips

1. Heat oven to 350°F (325°F for dark or nonstick pans). Grease bottoms and sides of 1 (8-inch) round cake pan, 1 (9-inch) round cake pan and 1 (10-oz) custard cup with shortening or cooking spray.

2. Make cake mix as directed on box, using water, oil and eggs. Pour 2/3 cup batter into custard cup; pour 2 cups batter into each cake pan. Bake custard cup 20 to 25 minutes and cake pans 25 to 30 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes. Remove cakes from custard cup and pans; place rounded sides up on cooling racks. Cool completely, about 30 minutes.

3. Spoon frosting into large bowl. Stir in enough food color until desired yellow color. Using serrated knife, cut rounded top off 8-inch cake. Place 8-inch cake, cut side down, on serving plate; spread 1/2 cup frosting over top. Place 9-inch cake, rounded side up, on frosted cake. To “crumb-coat” cake, spread thin layer of frosting over side and top of layered cake to seal in crumbs. Freeze cake 30 to 60 minutes.

4. Reserve about 1/2 cup frosting. Frost side and top of cake with remaining frosting. Place custard cup cake, rounded side up, 1 inch from edge of layered cake for head. Directly opposite head, place 2 orange candies, side by side, for tail shape. Frost head and candy tail with reserved frosting.

5. Add nonpareil candies to head for eyes; add chocolate chips to center of eyes, attaching with small amount of frosting. Cut rounded side of remaining orange candy to within 1/4 inch of flat side. Using sugared fingers, press cut halves of candy to make them thin to form upper and lower halves of beak. Push 2 toothpicks through beak and insert under eyes.

The baby shower cake should pull the entire theme and/or colors of the baby shower together. Decide what size of baby shower cake you will need. The size of the cake will depend upon how many people will be attending the baby shower. Tell the baker the approximate number of party goers you are expecting–and then ask to have the cake slightly larger. This will ensure that you have enough cake for those who show up without an RSVP. It will also enable the mother-to-be to save a piece for daddy!

Cakes should be ordered well ahead of time . You may be surprised to learn that many bakers are booked weeks in advance. Contact the baker of your choice, select your cake and plan the pickup date for the morning of the baby shower. Be sure to inquire about their hours – your bakery may have different hours or be closed on weekends when many showers are held.

Call the baker a few days prior to the baby shower. Go over the baby shower cake details again just to make sure you are both on the same page.

Planning a menu is an important part of most parties, and that includes a baby shower party. You want your guests and mom-to-be to enjoy the food.

When you are creating a menu for a baby shower, take into account the time of the day when the shower is being held. If baby shower is being held during lunch or dinner time, then you would probably want to serve full meal. If it is held in between then you can serve finger foods, dessert and beverages.

Take in to account the mood or theme of the shower when selecting the foods – BBQ would be great for a casual, co ed party but not such a great choice for a more formal affair. Don’t forget to order the cake!

Today, funeral directors are looking for ways to enhance their funeral preplanning sales. This creative selling insert is designed to do just that by making the calendar not only an advertising medium, but a marketing tool.

A recent market survey concluded that more people will react favorably to the suggestion of prearranging their funerals if the suggestion comes via a church calendar with a preplanning insert than if it comes from radio, television or billboard advertising.

The preplanning insert is bound between the cover and first calendar month, with the funeral home’s name and address printed on a detachable postcard. The postcard requires either a stamp for mailing or may be imprinted with the funeral home’s postal permit number. (No additional customer copy will be accepted for the preplanning insert other than the name, address and postal permit number, if desired.)

This preplanning insert feature is available for most all 2009 calendars and can be ordered in either English or Spanish.
